How to Read Tire Sizes Before Requesting a Quote

Understand tire size markings, load index and speed symbols before requesting a quote. Compare VEVR catalog examples and prepare a clear tire enquiry.

A tire quote is only useful when it describes the right product. Learning to read the size on a tire sidewall helps you compare catalog entries and send a precise enquiry. Size alone, however, does not confirm vehicle compatibility, load capacity or suitability for a particular market.

What does 195/65R15 mean?

In a common metric size such as 195/65R15, 195 is the nominal section width in millimeters. The number 65 is the aspect ratio: the nominal section height expressed as a percentage of section width. The letter R indicates radial construction, and 15 is the nominal rim diameter in inches.

These markings describe dimensions and construction, not a complete specification. Tires with the same size can have different service descriptions, load versions and intended uses. Always start with the vehicle manufacturer’s approved specification rather than choosing a replacement only because its diameter appears to match.

Read load index and speed symbols separately

The service description commonly appears after the size and includes a load index and a speed symbol. These must be checked against the vehicle requirements and the confirmed product data. A catalog image is not a substitute for a current technical specification, and a speed symbol is not permission to drive at that speed.

The supplied VEVR catalog contains some inconsistent load, pressure and maximum-speed entries. Our HTML pattern pages therefore list reference sizes without presenting disputed values as verified specifications. Ask for a corrected specification for the exact pattern and size before using such values for a purchasing or fitment decision.

Why LT, C and ST markings matter

The catalog includes passenger sizes as well as LT, C and ST designations. LT and C markings occur on light-truck or commercial applications; ST identifies special trailer tires. Their intended uses differ, and matching a rim diameter does not make these tires interchangeable.

The VEVR C16 page gives passenger-car reference sizes including 195/65R15. The ZT701 commercial pattern lists C and LT examples, while the ZT301 trailer pattern lists ST sizes. These examples help you identify the relevant catalog section, not approve a fitment.

A clear checklist for your next tire enquiry

  • Send the complete size and service description, preferably with a readable sidewall photo.
  • Identify the vehicle or trailer application and the intended operating conditions.
  • Specify the preferred brand and pattern, quantity and destination market.
  • Ask for written confirmation of load version, rim compatibility and applicable documentation.
  • Resolve differences between the catalog, sidewall and quotation before accepting the order.

Inflation should follow the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance and the confirmed application; a tire’s sidewall maximum is not automatically the recommended operating pressure. A qualified tire professional should check fitment. Explore the full tire catalog or send CAMPINTAL the complete requirement.
